New Year Eve: The Venetian, Macau

Woke up early in the morning again, this time headed to a ferry terminal to take a ferry to Macau. Took the 9.30 am ferry. Arrived in Macau about 1 hour later. Thereafter there's the Venetian shuttle bus to the Hotel. It's kind of convenient now as there is a shuttle bus instead of having to find a transport ourselves. Again dumped our luggage there. There's really lots of people in the hotel that it feels like a shopping mall instead of a six-star hotel. Being hungry already, we have to hurry down to the famous Portuguese restaurant in Hac Sa 黑沙. This restaurant is immensely popular that if you are just slightly late, most probably you won't get a seat. We arrived on time and luckily there was still a table for us as the place is almost full. A few minutes later we would have to wait for a seat. The last time I was here, we ordered roasted ribs that was really good. This time I decided to go for their top dish which was roasted pig.

Very tasty. You get the crispy skin of the roast pig plus the succulent meat to satisfy your hungry for some pork meat. Highly recommend for those coming to Macau.

Oh yes, did I forget to tell you that the Portuguese Egg Tart is a must have whenever you are near Hac Sa? Lowry's Bakery. Remember that. Went for egg tarts again as I never fail to have a craving for it whenever I'm in Macau.

After a good lunch, took bus 26A to 新马路 which where the 大三巴 is. Took a few christmas pictures there.

I got a fed up of people taking lousy shots of us so I decided to bring a tripod. It's a must for every overseas trip. For a clear shot, it's worth it.

This time managed to go inside to look at what artifacts in the church. Pretty uninteresting. There's even a crypt which I mistook it for the toilet! That's not the best place for you to take a piss.....

Took bus 26A back to the Venetian to check in, as the venetian is sitting almost right in the middle of Cota Strip, it's quite convenient to take the public bus to the famous places. Oh and there seem to be no traffic lights for pedestrian crossing. It's just a zebra crossing, so it's either you cross or get banged by a car in China. Proceeded with checked in but the queue was long. Then some staff directed us to another checking counter which was across the GOD DAMN few football fields wide distance in the hotel. My girlfriend was really pissed, plus the counter told her that they did not have the room we booked. Lp gave them a good scolding till they finally got one room for us. This is the true face of a tigeress. Lp - 1, Venetian - 0. Come on, a six star hotel cannot even give us a decent service is not a six star hotel at all. It's more of a budget hotel service.

It's very spacious. There's even 2 televisions in the room. One at the bed, the other at the living space. There's also internet connection and a fax machine for working personnels.


After a short rest, walked out again to have dinner in Taipa 氹仔 area. Had Crab congee and fried frog legs.

Taste good. Especially there's the crab egg mixed in the congee

After dinner, back to the Venetian for some shopping in the indoor shopping mall. The fake sky looks kind of nice. But still it's too fake. Oh the Gondola was nice as the boaters did really sing and they sang really well.

There was some festival going on for the countdown to New Year, but we were too tired to join in the festival. A nice warm bubble bath on New Year's Day was what we had. Ahhh so relaxing.....

Ocean Park

Woke up early in the morning, dumped our luggage at NTT hotel near Baptist University then headed for Ocean Park. You should always go to Ocean Park in the morning as it is less crowded in the morning which you can have the luxury of visiting those popular attraction rather than queuing up long queues for it when those tour groups arrive later in the afternoon. First attraction was the Ice wonderland, where inside is an attraction of many ice sculptures. It's Freezing cold in there! -10 to -15 degrees in there, coats are provided. Even with the coats, the hands were not protected from the cold, it's so cold that having your hands exposed to the cold air is close to giving me frostbite. Can feel my hands getting numb whenever I have to take the camera out to take some pictures.

After a freezing but fun encounter, out to take pictures with Santa Claus and his beautiful elf.

It's funny that you'll never see Santa's wife. It's always with his elf. Santa would be damn happy everyday that he got such beautiful elves working for him. Proceeded to play some of the rides in ocean park. I love taking roller coasters alot. Probably it's because of the thrill of such high velocity turns and twists that make it so exciting. However I'm afraid of those falling rides. Somehow when I'm falling, my heart seems to run up to my throat. It's a very scary feeling.

After the rides, ran to some house where mischievous elfs are trapped in it.

Finally we went to the Panda gallery where we get to see the new pandas that was a gift to Ocean Park. The new pandas were busy sleeping so, the older pandas where more of an attraction that day. Warning the picture below may not be suitable for work.

Lamma Island

Woke up in the morning waiting for her dad to go to work. You just can't imagine how exciting and amazing it was hiding from her father when we were living in the same house!
Anyway packed up for the afternoon to head for lamma island in HK. Before going to the ferry terminal in Central, went for lunch at Satay King in Mong Kok. It's some kind of restaurant, cheap and value for money. At first I thought they are popular for their satay as the name states. But it wasn't satay that was popular. It's well known for it's white curry rice. Never seen white curry rice before. So I ordered it.

You can choose the meat to go with the curry. Ordered the first meat in the menu. Some kind of pork. Here comes my food.

Tah dah! Delicious! The curry goes well with the hot white rice and pork. The pork is soft and tasty. The curry tasted sweet, have a slight milky taste and not very spicy at all. It resembles the japanese curry except it's white. Do try this when you are in HK. There are many chain outlets around in HK. Next is Toufu.

Nice texture, smooth inside.

Crab fried rice omelette. Reminds me of nasi pataya. Inside the rice there's bits and pieces of crab meat. I could even find small crab claws in it. The sauce is tangy and the fried rice is fragrant. I'm full after eating the white curry rice but somehow I kept putting spoonfuls of rice in my mouth.
After a full lunch, went to Central Harbor to take the ferry to Lamma Island. It's about a 1 hr ride to the island. Having a cold sea breeze while sitting on the deck, enjoyable.
Arrived at Lamma Island jetty at sun down, the view is beautiful. This place is more popular with expatriates as the place has chalets, pubs, seafood, nice and quiet environment plus there's hiking to do. Went to get our keys for our room. It's located just above a restaurant with a sea view balcony. So you could hear the sea waves and clanking of glass wines. A good place of relaxation.

There you could find many drinking pubs and also many of the shops sell wine for you to enjoy your drinking. Rented Lust/Caution 色,戒 VCD to watch in our room and bought some snacks. We were too full from the heavy lunch we had in the afternoon. Well as a movie from Lee Ang, luckily it wasn't too boring compared to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the plot was quite well depicted. The some of the sex scene was pretty real that you thought the actors were doing it for real. I do not know some sex scenes were cut in the Cat III VCD compared to the movie, the oral scene was too short. Lp was so disappointed that she wasn't able to see Tony Leung Chau Wai's Balls, she almost threw the VCD out of the window.

Good Night.
Woke up to have our breakfast at the balcony. Have a hearty breakfast to prepare for a hike in the mountains of Lamma Island. Hiking the way up was kind of fun, on the way up found a small shop selling beancurd. It's popular for it's beancurd in lamma island.


The beancurd is smooth and refreshing. Perks me up for the long walk ahead. As we hike up the hill, the path gets steeper and steeper. It's quite exhausting to walk up for 30 mins of steep slope carrying about 6 kg of load.

The path leads you to one part of the island to another part of the island but you'll have to climb through the hill in between.

Finally we reached the other side and took a ferry back to HK. Went to a food exhibition after that. Bought alot of cheap instant food. Like instant noodles and pasta. Really cheap.

Cafe Le must

27 December

26 December was boxing day, but it's a tough day for Lp as she had to mug for her HK CPA exams. Studying hard at trying to understand the stuffs she study and also fighting off the many temptations from her sisters and from me. How suffering for her.

27 December, Friday was exam day for her, accompanied her to the school while carrying all the heavy files she has to bring for reference in the exams. The files were so big and heavy that many candidates had to bring luggages to contain those files. Sent her, then return home. After that went back to school to bring lunch to her, then walked back on my own home carrying some files back while she took the next test. Finally at finished her exams at 5 pm, went back down to fetch her again. So to celebrate her end of suffering, brought her to a french restaurant which was highly rated by the people in Hong Kong. Called to book a table for 7.30 pm. First talked to the staff in English but they can't understand much so have to need some help from Lp again to book the table.
Reached the place at Hung Hom 紅磡 Shopping Centre. You can get there by KCR. As we were there early, walked around the shopping centre, there's a Gundam exhibition and event, Gundam fans will love it. Cheap.

Almost 7.30 pm, went to the restaurant and took our seats. There's a set dinner which appetizers, soup, main course, dessert and drinks. There is no set dishes for the set dinner, you can choose any kind you like for your dinner, some dish will have to add some extra charge. I apologise for not having the chance to take a photo of the menu but the varieties are good and interesting. I may not be able to recall the exact name of the dish, so pardon me.

The ambiance of the restaurant was nice and romantic. Good for bringing your loved one for a nice night of pleasure dining. Both of us ordered different dishes so we could pleasure our taste buds.

Appetizers

Baked Escargots in Mushrooms 焗 田 螺
Lp's appetizer, it's her first time eating snails, at first she's quite disgusted at the thought of eating snails but once she tasted it, she liked it. The escargots are baked well and full of flavor, combined with the mushroom, it's really good. Lp doesn't eat mushrooms so I ate all of them. Yummy!


Scallops With Asparagus Salad
Nice flavor of scallops and asparagus. Delicious. Starts your appetite for more.


Soups

Foie Gras Chestnut Soup 鵝 肝 栗 子 蓉 湯
This is really good, taste a little like peanut dessert. But was kind of full to finish the soup after the mushrooms from lp.


Lobster Bisque
Didn't really like this, too much alcohol taste as burning brandy was added into the soup. Probably tasted better without the brandy.


Main Course

Venison Steak in Red Wine
Delicious, it's deer's meat but having cooked in medium rare condition, it's juicy and really makes you want to have another slice of meat.


Lamb Steak
Cooked medium, juicy and nice. Didn't know that there's a strong coating of wasabi/mustard on the meat. I was boosted with an overwhelming hotness that almost left me crying. Lol.

Desserts
This is what girls are waiting for the most at the end of the meal. I'm also waiting for the desserts to try how good is it. I was in for a nice surprise.

Apple Tart
I must say it's really really good. It's one of the best hot dessert I ever tasted in a restaurant. The apple tart is warm, the crust is crispy and the apple is sweet. Thumbs up!


Dark Chocolate Mousse Cake
Looks simple, but when you put this in your mouth, you can have an orgasm eating it. It is just so good. The cold chocolate mousse just melts in your mouth while you chew on the soft cake. Lp looks as if in heaven eating it. She wanted more after that. This is a must have dessert.

Wonderful dinner there. The bill was about HK$460+ for 2 persons which is cheap considering it's a french dinner. For the food you get it's really worth it. The service was really really good. The waitresses are friendly and ready to meet your needs. They even asked about the food is it up to our liking. Really good service.

Christmas Eve

Christmas eve night, Lp asked me to pack 1 day of clothes. To where it's a mystery. Took a bus to Tsim Sha Tsui Harbor. I'm still wondering where is she going to bring me to kidnap. The harborfront is a beautiful sight at night. After much guessing, guess what can we do at the harbor? Going on a cruise!
Waited till about 6+ for the ferry to arrive and take us to the cruise ship. It's Lp's first time on a cruise so she thought that the cruise ship will berth at the harbor but it's too large so we have to take a ferry which will bring us to the ship. Anyway it's my first time too. Once on the ship we have to check in for our rooms. Seems there's many China mainlanders going on the ship. No one likes them for they are digusting and uncivilized. If Singapore's kiasuism is ugly, they are 100000000x worse. Jumping queues, shoving to be the first in queue, digging their noses, etc. Yucks.

Got our rooms, so went to find where our cabin was, finding our way in the ship was certainly confusing as we have to go up and down the stairs. After abit of walking we found our cabin! Put our stuffs down and headed for our Chirstmas dinner..... in the Karaoke lounge!

First soup was served, then a lobster for appetizer, then foie gras and main course was steak. Lobster was good, foie gras ok, but too bad can't eat beef so passed it to Lp where she gobbled it up eagerly. Dessert was bad, the mud pie was too sweet, only the biscuit was edible. After dinner headed back to the cabin for a rest, then headed out again to explore the ship and also the casino. Tried our luck in the casino as we have 2 free tickets for credits. So we played 大小 dice. Lost both times, first bet small, then the result wasn't small or big! Then second time bet small, and the result was big. Ok no luck. Lol. Explored the ship, damn cold outside as strong winter winds was blowing. At 11 pm there was a BBQ at the deck so had a little fun BBQ as I was still hungry from the dinner. The scene was kind of sleazy as can see men feasting on the meat while prostitutes tempting them. Some perverts even leering at other girls thinking that they are prostitutes when they are the ship's guests.

Once nothing more to explore, went back to the cabin for a rest while enjoying the rocking of the ship in the rough seas.

Just got back from Macau, 2007 has ended, wish all a great 2008 year! The funniest thing is I spent my first 2008 moment washing the bath tub!

Dinner with LP

Still in HK, pretty much got used to the place though cantonese is still a big barrier to adapt to in here. Felt quite lost as my cantonese isn't that good. been here for the past 7 days already. Don't feel really homesick at all. I just love the winter weather here. It's freezing sometimes especially in the morning. Just have to wear an extra sweater to keep warm. But it's good to hug someone warm during the cold weather! Shall write for Christmas entry soon..... errrr I hope.


Dinner with her and her sisters at a fusion restaurant. The food there is nice and the decor is quite unique. Her sisters are one crazy bunches, I kept laughing at their silly actions. Fun to be with.

Blogging in Hong Kong now. The weather is comfortable here. Ate some good food today but too bad forgot to bring the camera out. :>

Jenny's Birthday

Celebrated at a chinese restaurant somewhere in golden mile. $4.80 per dish, which is quite cheap, which means you can order many varieties to eat. eat dish serves about 3 person fill. Our table was over flooded with food that I'm afraid we even have to stack the plates.
As for Jenny's tradition, we got her a night gown. Pretty nice, even the other girls were tempted to get one for themselves.
After dinner, the intention was to go Bugis for a movie, well don't know why we chanced upon some "interesting" movies showing at the golden mile complex. Haha the ticketing office was so old, it seems like buying a movie ticket in the 80s. And the movie is really cheap! $6! It's been a long time since I saw a $6 movie. The cinema was manned by old grandmas. The seats are decent with plenty of leg room. Initially, I was kind of afraid there's something on the seats but it was clean. Haha the girls were even more phobic that they dun even want to lie on backrest.


Watched Good Luck Chuck, it's a pretty funny movie while I guess the main draw is actually watching Jessica Alba stripping. But I guess the guys will be disappointed as you won't actually gonna see her in the buff. But it's a light hearted movie that makes you laugh, not really romantic, but funny.

X'mas Dinner at Hungry Cow's

It was a great night of delicious food and wine. Enjoyed every dishes that was served and the most anticipated to taste was our "you'll never know what you'll gonna get" Ondeh Ondeh. Haha we skipped the Seared Scallop and shrimps on linguine cause we were just too damn full to stuffed ourselves anymore.

HELL EXPLAINED BY CHEMISTRY STUDENT

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid term.

The answer by one student was so 'profound' that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well :


Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today.

Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. < /P>

This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, 'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct......leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting 'Oh my God.'

Killer Luncheon Meat

Recent checks on the luncheon meat consignment from China have found that there are some cancer causing agents in some of the canned luncheon meat. Since then the batch is destroyed and hence a rise in price of our beloved luncheon meat. Luncheon meat is probably everyone's favourite breakfast food. As you can always find it in our fried breakfast noodles. I love luncheon meat too, especially cooking and eating it while out camping in the wild. Anyway the prices of luncheon meat are horribly high now. So I guess people will have to find another alternative - Sausages.

Anyway Maling is working hard on with it's R&D coming up with new products. And soon a new type of canned processed meat will be out.

Adam's Curse

Read a book called Adam's Curse by Bryan Skyes. Although it's been already a few years since it was published, it nevertheless very interesting read about genetics. I was intrigued by the discovery of the Y chromosomes and X chromosomes and also the mysteries surrounding our genes. Anyway for those non-biology readers, X and Y chromosomes determines whether we will be male or female when we are born. We have a total number of 46 chromosomes in our genes, every one which determines how we look, structured and probably behave and think. And in it, Chromosomes X and Y are our sex chromosomes. Females have XX and males are XY. So if you have a Y chromosome in your gene, you will probably be a male. Of course there will be exceptions.

Did you know that everyone of us develops first as a unisex organism? That means we both have female and male sex organs when we are still swimming in our mother's womb. As we develop, changes will occur, hormones will start to take over the development of sex organs. If we are XY, our male organs (testes) will start to develop and kills off the female glands. For XX, female organs will grow and the male glands will die off. Interesting isn't it?

Also do you know that the Y chromosomes is passed down only from your father? That means, the Y chromosomes does not exchange genes to develop random sets. They stay the same throughout all generations. You can probably tracked down who is your ancestor just by identifying similar Y chromosomes!

Another interesting thing is, our mitochondrion, is only passed from our mother. That means you can even trace back who was the first female on earth! Cause our mitochondrion probably came from a single source. Freaky!

Anyway it also discussed about why we have sex to give offsprings instead of just being asexual and just clone and multiply. Cause lots of energy is wasted to have sex and just produce a limited offsprings whereas by subdiving, we can achieve a higher efficiency and greater number of offsprings. Putting aside sex as pleasure, why we are still having sex to reproduce is probably to diversify. Imagine just a single SARS virus attack a asexual being, probably the whole human population will be wiped out cause we are just a copy having the same genes. Whereas a diversified human, a few lucky ones survive and can continue to live. Interesting right?

Oh, do males exist in this world just to allow reproduction? What if there is no need for men to exist? Interesting.

There probably more interesting things discussed in the book but I just put some main stuffs to share. If you are interested, go borrow the book. It's a good read for biotech students.
